Our brief for this Fashion Communication and Editorial project was to produce 6 X Final Editorial Images and a Final Magazine all inspired by the designer and visual artist Jahnkoy and aimed at the Teeth Magazine costumer. As an introduction, we looked at Jahnkoys' fashion video, The Displaced, which would start as a starting inspiration point. Jahnkoy plays with movement and urbanism in today's times, inspired by African culture and textiles, and looking at themes of identity, religion, culture, and fashion.
We were then split off into groups and given one of Jahnkoys ideology sentence from The Displaced to deconstruct using organic, free-flowing brainstorms to harness ideas. The sentence my group was given was "spirituality is displaced by religion". To start off we had an interesting group discussion about what the words spirituality and religion mean to us and then we put associative words into our brainstorm. From this brainstorm, we started collecting research, such as photography, art, historic events, songs, videos, etc and put all this on a padlet link to present to the class. I found this task really interesting, as hearing other peoples opinions and associations not only expanded my own knowledge but made me question and fully engage in the sentence and deconstruction of the ideologies behind the sentence, which really kickstarted a flow of ideas and inspiration.
We then presented to the class and listened to the other groups' presentation of different sentences, and from these presentations, we chose a sentence we found most interesting. I chose my original group sentence, "spirituality is displaced by religion" because the initial in-depth discussion really inspired me.
We then made our own individual brainstorm of the sentence to start our actual project. I found this organic way of generating ideas very helpful and actually created ideas I wouldn't normally think of.
