Section 1: A review of progress and achievement
through parts 1 & 2 of the course (Approx 150 words)
|
During the first two terms of my Foundation
at Ravensbourne I have learnt to create final outcomes using a range of
techniques, in depth research and references, and Fashion Promotion theory. I
have learnt to aim my outcomes towards a costumer using brand and target
market research, and costumer profiles. Although I initially struggled with
building my work off of a range of sources, I have also learnt to research
reference points, through primary and secondary research, in depth to contextualise
my work and give it meaning with regard to contemporary affairs by extending
my knowledge on important cultural movements and events, as well as the
reference points of other designers and artists. I have developed different
techniques in my work and have enjoyed experimenting with collage, digital
and tactile, as it combines illustrations, photography, typography and
layout, and have more recently enjoyed creating 3D props, sets and costumes. I
also had the opportunity to work with Fashion Scout at London Fashion Week,
which gave me an insight into the industry and how to work to a schedule and
deadlines, but also inspired me to push myself into the fast paced industry
way of working. Overall, I feel that with everything I have learnt so far has
given me a better understanding of how to produce a final outcome to industry
standard. | |
|
Section 2: Project Concept (approx 250 words)
|
Stockholm Syndrome is described as the
development of feelings of affection by a victim towards their captor, I want
to research the psychology and behaviour behind this survival strategy while
studying themes of human instinct and how it is altered under different
conditions such as intimidation, displacement and isolation. However, I also
want to explore this condition in regards to a more contemporary and everyday
context with the subject of chemical stimulants as I feel, in many ways,
Stockholm Syndrome is representative of todays’ society’s relationship with
prescribed drugs. Expanding this concept further, I want to explore themes of
an altered state of consciousness, drug culture and the measures people are
willing to take to achieve this ‘release’, such as the consumption of psychoactive
substances, sensory deprivation, trepanation and forms of mental anguish. Nan
Goldin’s photography and activism against companies manufacturing opioids has
greatly inspired me within this subject as she explored factors that
determine the legality of a drug and the consequences addictive prescription
drugs can have. Through the exploration of these concepts, I want to aim my
outcome at a reader of Sedition Magazine; young creatives, who are socially
and politically aware and have an appreciation for culture, phycology and
subversion. Alongside artist research, such as photographer Tyler Kohlhoff
and designer Gareth Pugh, gallery visits to exhibitions at The Serpentine and
Somerset House, and sketchbook development I want to produce a series of
zines exploring my title using techniques such as illustrations, typography,
photography and collage.
|
Section 3: Evaluation (approx 100 words)
|
Before starting my FMP project, I want to
look through my past blog posts and projects to see what I enjoyed, what was
successful and what wasn’t, this will help me use techniques that will
inspire and motivate me if I find I get stuck at any point and which past
mistakes to avoid. To record my process and evaluate my development I am
going to write a weekly blog post with regards to what I have achieved within
my project each week, this will include research, ideas, experiments,
feedback from tutorials with my tutor, peer assessments, what I have enjoyed
and how what I have achieved will help me move further.
