Easter: Constriction

After finishing my video I decided to move on to a new section of my captivity chapter; constriction. I started off by researching swelling and constrictive band syndrome and from this, I created an experiment involving bananas, zip ties, sculpture and binbags.

My first experiment involving bananas, I tied zip ties around the banana creating a swelling effect and I then photographed these bananas in random places with film, this was inspired by the previous section with an almost satirical item being placed in plain sight. These photos were quite interesting but I felt they didn't have enough substance behind them. My second experiment was creating a sculpture out of puffer jackets and zip ties inspired by the Commes des Garson bulging garment, however, I feel that this sculpture did not meet my customer's needs and would not fit into my publication.

So to push away from this but following a similar theme I looked at the artist Hans Bellmar and his distorted human figures and responded to this through collage which led me to my next experiment, inspired by Bellmar and also the sculpture I created, a bin bag with human arms and legs. I entrapped my model in a black bin bag and let his arms and legs come out, I like this experiment and wanted to do a small shoot involving this idea of swelling, the bananas and the human bin bag, using both digital and film photography. I also wanted to incorporate more collage into my imagery as it will suit my customer, so I collaged multiple images from the shoots with my experiments and other imagery I had sourced from books.
