FP Jahnkoy: Photography and Layout

In our photography and layout workshop with Ivan, one of our course leaders, we were taught how to layout our images from our mock shoot in an editorial magazine format. Ivan showed us some of his previous photographs in magazine format in different ways and on different paper types and qualities and how these changed the feel of the magazine and images. The images of Ivan's work were in documentary style with raw, organic 'poses' and this helped me understand the importance of documentary style photo's within the magazine alongside your more constructed, posed shoot.

Ivan also taught us about pre-production; which would be planning for the shoot, finding a model, location, concept board, styling, mock shoots and putting together a team for your final shoot, production; which is the actual shoot, and post-production; which is the editing of the photo's, layout of images all together and final magazine.

We then had to put our mock shoot images into a magazine format using InDesign and Photoshop, using a technique Ivan taught us once printed the layout. To create the layout, I looked at Teeth Magazine's layout, to stick to the target customer and create a magazine cohesive to Teeth. Ivan's technique to make a quick magazine was extremely helpful, as its a quick and efficient way to see make a mock-up magazine.

We also created a second concept board for our final shoot, and from feedback from my mock shoot, which confirmed what I had thought regarding my mock shoot,  I had a much clearer direction of where to go.
