The lesson was based around trend predictions which we were lucky to touch on as this is something which is looked over in degree level. To start off the task, we as a class, watched a short clip of the Preen AW17 catwalk runway and had to write down words that came to mind when looking at the style, fit, colour, textile, shape etc of the pieces. Then we had to write down influences and references which we felt could have impacted the runway collection through culture, fashion, politics, news etc. I enjoyed this as not only was I exposed to a new designers work, I was also able to develop a wider understanding of reference points and how to start to link things together.
With this, we then had to create a fashion scan to predict our own ideas and predictions on future trends which was found via the following equation: fashion scan + consumer scan = future trend. We had to pick from our selection of descriptive words for the runway and for me, I found the collection was very abstract yet contained in the sense that it all was very controlled. You had exaggerated, flamboyant and abstract pieces which were concentrated to a certain point or area in the body to add emphasis on the figure or a certain area.
For the second half of the equation being the Consumer Scan, we had to discuss in groups, the culture, news, politics etc. in today’s society. My group came up with the idea that the media influences us as individuals to a point where it all can be too much and chaotic. From this, we had produced a full brainstorm filled with different adjectives and references to work with.
To then complete the equation for the trends prediction, we then had to pick a word from both sides to the equation, with mine I chose “contradiction” and “androgyny” which I then shortened to controlled chaos in order for it to be clearer and easier for me to work with.
I have never really thought about using an equation to predict a fashion trend before as it is such a unique technique which I am glad I have learnt. I really enjoyed the group discussion and working with others to research culture and the impact it has on society as well as being exposed to new fashion and ways of describing it.
